Winona, Minn. - A tough day shooting the basketball spoiled the Warriors' home hoops opener, as the University of Minnesota Duluth dealt Winona State a 68-47 setback Saturday, Jan. 2 in McCown Gymnasium.
WSU shot just 25.4% from the floor in their first action in almost ten months and were simply not able to get on track offensively. The Warriors were led by
Allie Pickrain with 11 points on the day, while
Taylor Hustad chipped in 10.
Alex Dornfeld added eight for WSU coming off the bench in the first game played on newly-named WNB Financial Court. Points from behind the arc were noticeably absent, as Winona State was just 4-for-20 from three-point territory.
Minnesota Duluth was paced by the tandem of Brooke Olson and Maesyn Theisen, who scored 14 and 15 points apiece, respectively. Olson, the NSIC North Preseason Player-of-the-Year, also accounted for six rebounds in leading UMD to the win. She was 5-of-9 from the floor and a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. As a team, Minnesota Duluth was 25-of-57 from the floor, good for a 43.9% mark.
Rebounding tilted in the Bulldogs favor as well, with UMD hauling in 41 boards compared to 37 for Winona State. One bright spot for Winona State was a collective 11-of-12 from the free throw line, and all 15 Warriors saw time in the contest.
