Box Score Sioux Falls, S.D.-- Winona State women's basketball lost to the (RV) University of Sioux Falls, 67-61 in NSIC South action on Saturday, Jan. 16 in the first of two games against the Cougars this weekend.
Ava Sergio had 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds to help lead Winona State (0-2 / 0-1 NSIC South) in a strong effort against USF (3-0 / 3-0 NSIC South), who are receiving votes in the most recent NCAA Division II poll.
Taylor Hustad also scored 12 and had seven rebounds, while
Sydney Lodermeier chipped in 11 points and three assists in a solid night for Winona State.
Emily Kieck had six assists while running the Warrior offense and had Winona State up at the break 35-30.
Unfortunately for head coach
Scott Ballard and his team, USF standout Ann Brecht hit for 17 points on the evening, including a 5-of-6 night from the foul line, a location the Cougars found themselves with a decided advantage, making 13-of-17 foul shots. In contrast, WSU earned just six trips to the charity stripe.
The Cougars held the advantage in rebounding, 46-36, while Winona State scored more from close range, winning the points in the paint battle, 36-26. Nine Warriors found their way to the score sheet in a balanced offensive effort, but will look to tomorrow for their next opportunity to crack into the win column.
Winona State will face the University of Sioux Falls in the second of their two-game series, tipping off at 2pm in the Stewart Center at USF.
