WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's soccer team, coming off a 1-1 2OT draw against Bemidji State University - the 11th ranked team in the country - on Friday, will host the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1pm.
Against UMC today, Winona State (3-7-1 / 2-6-1 NSIC) will look to replicate the fast start they had on Friday against the Beavers, scoring in the 26th minute of play through senior
Riley Harmon. The Golden Eagles (1-10 / 1-7 NSIC) have struggled to score as of late, having been shutout in their last five matches, and have been held to just two goals total this season. On Friday, Minnesota Crookston fell to Upper Iowa University 3-0; Golden Eagle goalkeeper Abby Olsen had seven saves in the match for her team and has played all but one half for her team on the year. Abby Fettinger leads UMC in shots with 14; Fettinger, Morgan Laplante and Lanie Padelford all have scored on the season for the Golden Eagles.
For Winona State, senior goalkeeper
Yanel Ortiz registered eight saves in holding the Beavers to a 1-1 draw on Friday, including a pair of close range stops in the second overtime period. Hamon's goal was her fourth of the season, leading Winona State in that category. Against BSU, several Warriors registered triple digits in minutes played, with Ortiz,
Missy Greco,
Emily Chudik,
Hannah Dunlavy,
Camryn Cadiz,
Bailey Deininger and
Katie Timmons all going over the century mark in the match. The valuable NSIC point represented the second overtime match for Winona State this season.
After the match, the Winona State University Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) will be hosting the annual Winona State Zombie Crawl, an opportunity for kids to dress up in their Halloween costumes and take part in activity stations set up by each Warrior team. The event includes healthy snacks for the participants.
