WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State volleyball team, ranked No. 12 in the current American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, embarks on a weekend road trip to Augustana and Wayne State.
The Warriors (17-3, 8-3 NSIC) sit in fourth place in the mighty Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) with nine NSIC matches to go. WSU will take on Augustana (12-7, 7-4 NSIC) this evening, Oct. 22 at 6pm, and then will travel to No. 8 Wayne State (16-3, 9-2 NSIC) on Saturday, Oct. 23 for 1pm matchup.
Augustana is coming off a tough weekend on the road, losing to Minnesota State and No. 7 Concordia-St. Paul. The Vikings are led Maddy Guetter with 3.61 kills per set, Avery Thorson with 9.84 assists per set, and Erika Bute who is averaging 4.68 digs per set. The Warriors are looking to extend their current eight-match win streak over the Vikings.
Wayne State, currently ranked No. 8 in the AVCA weekly poll, has won nine of their last 10 matches, with the loss being at No. 7 Concordia St. Paul last weekend. The Wildcats are led by Kelsie Cada with 3.35 kills per set, Rachel Walker with 10.21 assists per set, and Alaina Wolff with 3.29 digs per set. The Warriors lost to Wayne State the last time the two teams faced off, but WSU has won five of the last six matches against the Wildcats.
The Warriors are led offensively by
Megan Flom, who is averaging 3.84 kills per set at a hitting percentage of .420, both good for top-five in the NSIC.
Bre Maloney's 11.29 assists per set have her at second in the NSIC individual standings. Defensively,
Becca Pagel leads the NSIC with 4.99 digs per set.
With less than half the conference season left,
Joe Getzin and the Warriors are looking to win pivotal conference matches against the Vikings and Wildcats this weekend.
