WINONA, Minn. - Winona State University Athletic Director,
Eric Schoh, announced today that two finalists will visit campus to interview for the vacant head football coach position.
The first finalist, Zac Barton, will be on campus Monday, December 13 and the public is invited to an open session at 11:00 a.m. in the Science Laboratory Center (SL) 120. Barton is currently the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Kent State University. Barton has been a part of the Kent State program since 2017 and is a part of a staff that has led the Golden Flashes to the 2021 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Prior to Kent State, Barton served at Winona State between 2012 and 2017. During that time, Barton was a defensive line coach, special teams coordinator and, beginning in 2015, served as co-defensive coordinator for the Warriors. In addition, Barton coordinated the WSU recruiting efforts. He has prior coaching experience at South Dakota State University, the University of Memphis, and the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Barton graduated from Winona State with a master's degree in sports management and earned his undergraduate degree from Bloomsburg University. As an undergrad at Bloomsburg, Barton was a four-time All-Academic selection and played for three Husky teams which earned PSAC Championships.

The 2021 Winona State football team finished 7-4 overall, winning four of the last five games. Longtime Warriors head coach
Tom Sawyer retired after 25 years at the helm, earning a 197-89 overall record and leading Winona State to ten post-season appearances.
