Box Score Springfield, MO – In a pitching duel that allowed just 10 combined hits and two combined walks, the Winona State Warriors managed to squeak out a 2-1 victory over the Maryville Saints to close out their weekend trip with a winning record.
With the win Winona State improves to 3-2 on season, while Maryville falls to 1-4.
After failing to capitalize on a runner in scoring position for three of the first five innings of play, Winona State's
Derek Baumgartner hit a two-run bomb to bring home
Sam Kohnle and give WSU the 2-0 lead.
Maryville countered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but stellar pitching by the trio of
Bailey Banaszynski,
Austin Savary, and
Nicolas Herold allowed Winona State to pull out the one-run victory.
Banaszynski (1-0) stuck out eight in the win, while Herold pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to get his second save of the year.
Kohnle went 2-for-4 on the day with a run scored.
Winona State won't be in action again until Saturday, March 20
th as they open NSIC play in Winona with a three-game series against Minnesota Crookston. Saturday will be a doubleheader, while Sunday's matchup will be solo game. First pitch is set for noon both days.
