BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- The Winona State University baseball team had three standouts recognized on the 2021 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Baseball All-Conference teams, as announced Tuesday, May 18.
Austin Savary,
Derek Baumgartner and
Sam Kohnle each were named to the 2021 All-Conference teams; Savary was recognized for his work as a designated hitter, while Baumgartner and Kohnle earned their honors at catcher and first base, respectively.
Savary, a senior from Dubuque, Iowa, hit .304 overall, with 34 base hits collected across 112 at-bats. The Wahlert High School product had 18 RBI, hit four home runs, and collected seven doubles. He also was 5-for-6 in stolen base attempts on the year, while appearing in 42 contests with 38 starts. For the Warriors, Savary also took the mound on nine occasions, including seven starts; the veteran left-hander threw 47.2 innings this year.
Baumgartner batted .288 and led Winona State in triples with four, a mark also tied for tops in the NSIC. The Almond (Wis.) High School standout had five homers, drove in 26 RBI and collected 65 total bases. He also hit four doubles. Behind the plate, Baumgartner registered a .978 fielding percentage, while throwing out 13 base stealers, tied for third-best in the league.
Sam Kohnle set several all-time best marks in the Warrior record book on the way to an outstanding season for head coach
Kyle Poock. Kohnle surpassed the Winona State singles record of 171 with a base hit at Wayne State College in April. The senior from Tisch Mills, Wis. also became the 11th Warrior to pass the 200 hits mark in his career and finishes with 43 doubles, tied with Joe Magee at seventh all-time. Defensively, Kohnle's 799 putouts rank him third all-time in the WSU record book, and he finished the 2021 with a .987 fielding percentage.
As a group, Savary, Baumgartner and Kohnle combined to help lead Winona State to their second-straight NSIC postseason appearance and a 22-20 overall record in 2021.
