Warrior Game Day: Football

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University football team - currently ranked third in NCAA Division II Super Region Four - is set to travel to Upper Iowa University after an extended home stand that saw the Warriors post back-to-back wins over nationally ranked opponents. Winona State will kickoff against the UIU Peacocks at noon in Harms-Eischeid Stadium in Fayette, Iowa on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Winona State (7-2 overall, 4-0 NSIC South) and Upper Iowa (1-8 overall, 0-4 NSIC South) have had a one-sided series in recent memory, with WSU owning a 11-2 record over the Peacocks since 2008.

Winona State has beaten two nationally ranked teams in the previous two weeks, downing the University of Sioux Falls, then No. 11 in the country, 20-17 at home on Oct 22. Last week, WSU beat Augustana 24-7; the Vikings were in the Receiving Votes category at the time.

Upper Iowa lost last week at Wayne State College, 56-14. The Peacocks have scored more than 30 points only once this year, beating Minot State 33-22 on Oct. 22.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES
  • The contest on Saturday marks the first road game for Winona State since Oct. 15, when WSU beat SMSU 43-7. 
  • Winona and Fayette are 100 miles apart, making UIU the closest WSU rival in the league.
  • Winona State has the second-best defense in the NSIC in terms of points allowed, at 17.2.
  • WSU's offense is seventh in the league in average points scored at 28.8 per game. 
  • The Warriors are featured in both the NCAA Division II Super Region rankings (3rd) and the AFCA Coaches' Poll Receiving Votes category.
  • WSU is in the top-50 in the country in total team defense, yielding an average of 316.6 yards per game and offensive TDs allowed at 20 total on the year. 
  • Ty Gavin is 3rd in the NSIC in average yards per game (80.9) and has 728 total yards so far this year. 
  • Winona State has blocked three punts this season that have resulted in Warrior scores. 
  • Kicker Jacob Scott leads the league in points scored by a kicker (67) and is second overall among all players. 
  • Trevor Paulsen and Kyle Haas have split quarterback duties in games so far this year. Combined, they are 144-of-253 for 1,678 yards and ten TD's.
  • Darryl Williams leads Winona State in receiving with 275 yards, good for a 13.75 yards per catch. 
  • As a returner, Darryl Williams is second in the NSIC in punt return yards (261) and second in kick return yards (435). 
  • QB Trevor Paulsen has the third-fewest interceptions (4) of any NSIC quarterback with at least 125 passing attempts. 
  • Jacob Scott is 28-for-28 on PAT's this season, one of only two kickers in the league to be perfect on point-after attempts with 25 kicks or more.
  • Winona State picked up a high-profile transfer wide receiver in Ricky Smalling, who had a standout career at the University of Illinois. Smalling joins other former Big Ten athletes Noah Carlson (Michigan), Cooper Nelson (Wisconsin) and Dominik London (Minnesota) on the Warrior roster. 
  • Sam Santiago-Lloyd has 410 yards on 116 carries this season and leads all WSU rushers with four touchdowns. 
  • Clay Schueffner is tops in the NSIC in total tackles (83) and and second in the league in solo stops (50).
  • Brian Corbins, Jr. leads Winona State in interceptions with three on the year. 
  • Carter Duxbury, last season's NSIC Defensive Player of the Year, has been in on six sacks in 2022, leading the team. 
  • Winona State has scored 13 rushing touchdowns this year through six different players. 
  • Winona State beat Upper Iowa 40-12 at WSU last season
  • One of UIU's only wins over Winona State came in 2018 in Fayette, when the Peacocks outlasted the Warriors, 34-33.
  • Head coach Brian Bergstrom is 7-2 in his first year at Winona State.
Upper Iowa University STORYLINES
  • The Peacocks are 1-8 on the year. 
  • Upper Iowa's only win this season was a 33-22 win at home versus Minot State.
  • Desean Phillips leads UIU in rushing with 398 yards and one TD.
  • The Peacocks average 15.22 points on offense and 236.8 total yards of offense per game. 
  • Upper Iowa has a 3rd down conversion rate of 28.03.. 
  • The Peacocks have thrown six interceptions this year.
  • Upper Iowa has had two QB's see significant time; Marcus Orr is 88-of-157 for 960 yards and Darryle Overstreet, Jr. is 53-of-85 for 603 yards.
  • Both Peacock signal callers have six touchdown passes this year. 
  • Jason Hoskins has been the head football coach at UIU since 2019.

WARRIOR NOTABLES:
  • Winona State is the highest ranked NSIC team in the current NCAA Division II Super Region rankings.
  • WSU and fourth-ranked Minnesota State Mankato will play next Saturday. 
  • The Warriors were tabbed for fourth in the NSIC South and sixth place overall in the 2022 NSIC Football Poll. They currently lead the South Division at 4-0.
  • WSU leads the league in field goals made (13) and attempted (19).
  • On the season, WSU is 23-for-28 on scoring attempts in the Red Zone.
