Warrior Game Day : Baseball

DULUTH, Minn. - The Winona State University baseball team will take on the University of Minnesota Duluth today, April 10 with a doubleheader slated to start at 1:30 p.m. at Wade Stadium.

The two teams last faced off in a twin bill on March 28, 2021, as a part of a three-game series that weekend between the Warrior and Bulldogs.  Winona State swept UMD in those contests, including a pair of one-run victories (6-5 game one and 5-4 game three) that sandwiched a 12-1 game two rout by WSU.

This time around, the Warriors (4-12, 2-3 NSIC) will face a Minnesota Duluth (11-12, 5-5 NSIC) team that has won two straight and owns an unbeaten home record.   Mother nature has not been kind to the Warrior schedule as Winona State has had five of their last seven games canceled due to weather and field conditions. When the Warriors did play, it went well, with WSU beating University of Mary twice on the road last weekend, 3-1 and 7-4.

At the plate, Winona State is led by Carter Brinkman who is hitting .292 and is second on the team in home runs with four.  Cooper Kapanke and Derek Baumgartner lead the Warriors in long balls with five homers each. Combined, Brinkman, Kapanke and Baumgarter have accounted for 41 of Winona State's 75 RBI's this year.

On the hill, Kyle Gendron has put together some solid starts, most recently going four innings against UMary to pick up the win. Nicolas Herold is tied with Caleb Strack for the most innings pitched (18.2) and leads the Warrior staff in both strikeouts (34) and wins (2). Zach Watzka worked for a Warrior win versus the Marauders last weekend, claiming the victory coming in relief and striking out four UMary batters across two and 2/3's innings.
