WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University baseball team will host No. 22 Augustana University today, April 21, in a NSIC doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the cozy confines of Loughrey Field.
Originally scheduled to be a doubleheader on Wednesday, Winona State and Augustana moved the contests to today due to weather.
The two teams last faced off in the NSIC postseason tournament last spring, a pair of games in which the Vikings dispatched the Warriors 12-0 and 7-4 in Sioux Falls. Today, Winona State will be looking to capture the same form that saw them sweep Bemidji State at home in the last midweek NSIC twin bill, as WSU swept BSU 9-4 and 6-2 on Wednesday, April 13. Most recently, Minnesota State - Mankato took three from Winona State, beating the Warriors in a three-game series.
Winona State (9-17, 7-8 NSIC) is led at the plate by Dane Weiland who is batting .329 and Carter Brinkman hitting .316. Derek Baumgartner leads Winona State in home runs with six, one more than Warrior teammate Cooper Kapanke who has five. Both Baumgartner and Kapanke have 19 RBI to lead the team, while Brinkman has 18. Nick Herbst is a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases for the Warriors.
On the mound, Nicolas Herold is 3-1 on the year, having made nine appearances overall. Herold leads the Warrior pitching staff in innings pitched with 31 and has struck out 56 batters. Kyle Gendron is 2-0 for head coach Kyle Poock, and has struck out 14 hitters while walking just five. Cameron Kramer, Caleb Strack and Dillon Whittaker have all eclipsed the 25 innings-pitched mark on the season.
The Vikings (29-7-1, 19-4 NSIC) are coming off a three-game series against Wayne State College, winning two games against the Wildcats by 11-3 and 6-4 scores and dropping one game, 2-1.
