WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University track and field team will send several student-athletes to the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, held May 26-28 at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. GVSU and the West Michigan Sports Commission will serve as co-hosts for the championships.
Individually, Winona State will have four student-athletes pursuing national championships in their respective events and a relay team in contention for top honors in NCAA Division II track and field.
Shereen Vallabouy, the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor 400-meter champion, will look for a repeat performance in the outdoor championship, competing in the 400-meters in Allendale. Vallabouy has set many records during 2022, including running a 53.37 Warrior record in the 400-meters and owning the top 200-meter time in Winona State history at 23.52. Vallabouy, from Ipoh, Malaysia, has also featured on five different WSU relay teams that have set top-ten times in the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400-meter relay races. Her time of 53.60 at the 2022 NSIC Outdoor Championships set a new conference record in the event.
Brooklyn Schyvinck will compete in the 400-meter hurdles, looking to cap a career that has included several All-America honors and top Warrior times. Schyvinck currently sits third all-time in the Warrior 400-meter hurdle history, with a time of 1:00.73. Schyvinck also landed in the Warrior top-10 in 2022 in the 200-meter race, claiming fourth all-time at 24.05 and has the fifth-best Warrior time ever in the 400-meters at 55.69. The Reedsburg, Wis. product has earned six different All-America honors in her storied WSU career.
Kaylee Beyer, the owner of the all-time best Winona State 1,500 meter and 800-meter times, will run in the 1,500 meters at GVSU. Beyer had a breakout season in 2022 for head coach
Mason Rebarchek, setting an 800-meter record of 2:11.84 and a 1,500-meter best of 4:26.52. Beyer, a junior from Mukwonago, Wis., will be making her second career appearance at an NCAA Championship event, having earned an opportunity to compete in the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships on the strength of a 4:50.74 mile time at the NSIC Championships. Beyer broke not one but two WSU indoor distance marks in 2022, turning in a time of 2:58.67 in the 1,000-meters to set the Warrior record in that event, in addition to her all-time best WSU mile mark.
Lindsay Cunningham heads to Michigan with the rare opportunity to become an All-America honoree in three different seasons in the same academic year, having claimed seventh place in the 2021 NCAA Cross Country National Championships and fifth place in the 5,000 meters at the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Cunningham also won the 5,000 meters at the 2022 Drake Relays, becoming the first NCAA Division II athlete to earn the championship in that event since 1980. In Allendale, the sophomore from the Wisconsin Dells will compete in the 5,000-meter race, an event in which she holds the all-time Winona State record of 16:05.36. Cunningham set a new NSIC record in the 10,000-meter race at the 2022 NSIC Outdoor Track and Field championships at 34:09.57.
The Winona State 4 X 400 relay team also earned qualification for the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, having run a championship time of 3:53.32 at the 2022 NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. At GVSU, the team will consist of
