Warrior Game Day: Football

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University football team and head coach Brian Bergstrom returns home for action in week four of the 2022 football season, taking on Minnesota State - Moorhead on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
 
In week three, Winona State succumbed to their opponent for the first time this season, falling 34-24 on the road at Bemidji State University.  The Beavers used a big second quarter to pull away from the Warriors, but Winona State scored a pair of late touchdowns in the second half to gain some momentum heading into week four at home. 

The Warriors (2-1 overall | 0-0 NSIC South) will face a MSU-Moorhead squad (1-2 overall | 0-0 NSIC North) that lost to No.13 Augustana at home last week. Winona State has won the last three meetings of the two teams and have won four of the last five. The Warrior dominance in the recent years includes a 65-21 win over the Dragons in 2013 and a 42-17 victory over MSUM in 2015, the two most recent matchups at Maxwell Field.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES
  • Warrior wideout Cooper Nelson has nine catches for 104 yards and touchdown to lead the WSU receivers. 
  • Winona State is led on defense by Clay Schueffner with 37 tackles, while Warrior teammate Carter Duxbury has 3.5 tackles for loss.
  • In the secondary, Mitch Snitker has 21 tackles, the leader in that group. 
  • Against Bemidji State, Brian Corbins, Jr. had a pick-six to opening the scoring, the first INT return for TD this year for WSU.
  • Freshman Kyle Haas saw his first career action under center vs. BSU, going 6-for-10 for 61 yards.
  • In his third career start, Warrior quarterback Trevor Paulson went 15-of-27 for 169 yards and TD.
  • Paulsen also ran for a touchdown in the second half, his second rushing TD of the year.
  • Sam Santiago-Lloyd the team with 46 rushing yards on six attempts at BSU.
  • At BSU, Joe Sikma entered the BSU game without a catch and ended by leading the team in receiving yards (80) on the day.
  • Darryl Williams had the most catches with five at BSU.
  • Clay Schueffner is currently leading the NSIC with 37 total tackles, including 19 solo stops. His 12.3 tackles per game ranks fifth across NCAA Division II so far this season.
  • Winona State picked up a high-profile transfer wide receiver in Ricky Smalling, who had a standout career at the University of Illinois. Smalling joins other former Big Ten athletes Noah Carlson (Michigan), Cooper Nelson (Wisconsin) and Dominik London (Minnesota) on the Warrior roster. 
  • Jaylen Schleicher got his first touchdown of the season last Saturday vs. Bemidji State, a 23 yard catch. .
  • WSU placekicker Jacob Scott went 1-for-2 for the third straight contest. Scott is 3-for-6 on the season with makes from 22 yards and 26 yards on two occasions. His misses have been from 32, 24 and 33 yards.
MSU-Moorhead STORYLINES
  • The Dragons fell to 1-2 with a 31-7 loss to No.13 Augustana at home last week.
  • Against the Vikings, MSUM receiver Gage Florence had eight catches for 105 yards for his first 100-yard receiving game of his career. 
  • Dragon QB Tommy Falk has thrown for 582 yards and three touchdowns to lead the passing attack.
  • As a team, MSUM is averaging 247.3 yards per game of offense and allowing 412
  • Head coach Steve Laqua is in his 10th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 49-65 at the school.

WARRIOR NOTABLES:
  • WSU was a perfect 3-for-3 in the red zone and also were successful on their only fourth-down conversion attempt in the game. Third down was a different story, as WSU struggled with a 1-for-14 3rd down conversion rate.
  • The Warriors were tabbed for fourth in the NSIC South and sixth place overall in the 2022 NSIC Football Poll. 
  • The combined efforts of QB's Haas and Paulsen yielded the most passing yards this season for WSU; together, they went 21-of-37 for 230 yards. 
  • Jacob Scott has been perfect on his PAT attempts this year. 
  • WSU averages 54.33 yards in penalties a game and averages 28:47 in time of possession.
  • On the season, WSU is 10-of-11 in scoring attempts in the Red Zone.
