St. CLOUD, Minn. - The Winona State University women's basketball team dropped a NSIC game on the road, losing at St. Cloud State, 58-43.
Winona State battled back from a 12-2 deficit early in the first quarter with a 9-0 run to pull within one point at 12-11, but a scoreless second quarter hampered hopes of a complete Warrior comeback. A strong defensive effort by WSU kept the game within reach despite the offensive struggles, as St. Cloud State was held to just 12 points in both the first and second frames.
Down 24-11 at the break, the Warriors outscored SCSU in the third quarter by one point at 14-13, but the home team responded with a 21-point fourth period to pull away. The Huskies stretched their winning streak over Winona State to three games; WSU last beat SCSU 55-53 in St. Cloud on Feb. 2, 2019.
Alex Dornfeld led Winona State in scoring and rebounding with seven points and seven boards, while
Lauren Fech,
Caitlin Riley and
Paige Peaslee all scored six points apiece.
Ava Sergio hauled in five rebounds and blocked a pair of Huskie shots.
SCSU was led by Katrina Theis with 22 points, while Jada Eggebrecht added 12. Theis also hauled in eight rebounds.
As a team, Winona State was 17-of-46 (37.0%) for the contest, with the 0-of-7 second quarter looming large in the final outcome. The Warriors were 4-of-13 from behind the arc and hit 5-of-9 efforts (55.6%) from the free throw line. The host Huskies were 24-of-53 (45.3%) from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 (100%) from the charity stripe.
Winona State (9-8 overall, 3-8 NSIC) will look to rebound at Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, Jan. 14 in a 3:30pm tip off in Romano Gymnasium.
