DULUTH, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team was unable to pull of the upset today, falling to No. 15 Minnesota Duluth by a final score of 66-40.
The Warriors, who are now 9-9 overall and 3-9 in the NSIC, faced a tough test in the league-leading and 15th-ranked Bulldogs (15-2, 12-0 NSIC) and UMD ran away with the victory.
Winona State and Minnesota Duluth were tied at 13 apiece with 1:30 left in the opening frame, but UMD closed the first quarter on an 8-0 run to hold a 21-13 score after one.
The teams traded buckets on the opening possessions of the second quarter, but
Kaitlyn Schrimpf's three pointer ended up being the only points by WSU in the second frame. UMD closed the half on a 14-0 run to take a commanding 37-16 lead heading into the break.
The Warriors were unable to put together a second-half comeback, and ultimately dropped their second-consecutive contest.
Alex Dornfeld led the Warriors with eight points and five rebounds.
Paige Peaslee went 3-4 from the field and scored six points in just eight minutes of play to be WSU's second-leading scorer.
Four different Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by Brooke Olson who notched 14 points and eight rebounds on 7-8 shooting.
As a team, WSU was held to 28.3% (17-60) shooting from the field and 12.5% (2-16) shooting from deep while UMD knocked down 54.9% (28-51) of their shots.
Winona State will turn their attention to another road trip next weekend, as they face Minot State and UMary on Friday, Jan. 20 and Saturday, Jan. 21.
