Winona State football to open 2023 season at Saginaw Valley State

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University football program has added a non-conference opponent to the WSU 2023 season schedule and the Warriors will travel on week one next fall.

Winona State will take on Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Saginaw Valley State University on Thursday, Aug. 31 in University Center, Michigan.  WSU and SVSU will kickoff at 6 p.m. (EST) in the week one opening tilt.  The contest will take place in Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium.

Saginaw Valley State went 8-3 overall in 2022 and earned a 3-3 GLIAC record. SVSU was 4-2 at home last fall and were ranked as high as 17th in the NCAA Division II AFCA Coaches' Poll. The 2023 match up will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

In 2022, Winona State advanced to the NCAA Division II Football postseason for just the seventh time in program history.  Under first-year head coach Brian Bergstrom, WSU went 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC South, earning a share of the division title.
