Winona State Set to Host No. 5 Minnesota State for Homecoming Game

WINONA, Minn. --- The Winona State football team returns to Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium this week to take on No. 5 Minnesota State for homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m.
 
The Warriors (2-4, 2-3 NSIC) look to get back into the win column after falling to Wayne State in a 17-14 nailbiter. No. 5 Minnesota State (6-0, 5-0 NSIC) took down Concordia-St. Paul last week 49-7 and looks to move to 7-0 on the season for the first time since 2023.
 
TICKETS
Fans attending the contest will need to purchase tickets online prior to arriving at the venue. There will be no ticket sales at the gate. Tickets can be purchased at this link: https://winonastate.vivenushop.com/
 
WARRIOR GAMEDAY EXPERIENCE
Winona State invites all fans to participate in the Warrior Game Day Experience, beginning at 11:00am at the intersection of Johnson and Mark streets on the campus of WSU. Kickoff for the homecoming game will be at 2 p.m. in Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
 
HALL OF FAME
On Friday, Oct. 9th, Winona State athletics will induct six new members into the Winona State Athletics Hall of Fame. Those members include Michele Bailey (Tennis), Holly (Sutton) Barton (Soccer), Derek Chance (Football), Molly (Link) Dupont (Softball), Brad Lange (Baseball), and Shannon (McGowan) Newsome (Volleyball).
 
The group will also be recognized during halftime of the football game against Minnesota State.
 
WINONA STATE NOTES
  • Winona State and Minnesota State will face off for the 64th time in program history on Saturday. The Warriors are 19-40-4 all-time against the Mavericks and are looking to pick up a Homecoming victory.
  • Sophomore QB Jacob Sampson completed 21 of 36 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown last week vs Wayne State.
  • Sampson also led the Warriors on the ground with 60 rushing yards, while Junior RB AJ Moore added a rushing touchdown.
  • Sophomore WR Jake Schultz hauled in eight receptions for 85 yards on the day.
  • Muhammad added a touchdown through the air on a 32-yard pass from Sampson.
  • Sophomore defensive back Kane Donnelly led the Warriors' defense with six solo tackles, six assisted tackles, and a forced fumble. T
  • his is the second season under the leadership of Head Coach Brian Curtin. Curtin, who has been a part of the Winona State football staff since 1997.
  • The Warriors are now 2-3 in conference play and 2-4 on the season after their road loss to Wayne State.
 
MINNESTOTA STATE NOTES
  • Minnesota State enters the week as the No. 5 team in the AFCA Coaches Poll and the No. 3 team in the D2Football.com poll. The Mavericks are 5-0 on the season.
  • MSU enters the week after defeating Concordia-St. Paul 49-7.
  • Head Coach Todd Hoffner reached a significant milestone last week, recording his 200th career victory and is in his 24th season at Minnesota State.
  • The Mavericks piled up 512 yards of total offense last week, limiting the Golden Bears to just 231 total yards.
  • Junior running back Sam Backer leads the Mavericks' rushing attack with 408 yards and six touchdowns on 61 carries.
  • Sophomore quarterback Maximus Sims leads MSU through the air, completing 41-of-76 passes for 626 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Defensively, sophomore linebacker Jefferson Mobry leads the team with 27 total tackles, while senior linebacker Nathan Drumm follows with 25 stops.
