Warrior Game Day : Women's Basketball

DES MONIES, Iowa - The Winona State University women's basketball team will take on Drake University in an exhibition contest on Wednesday, Nov. 1 in Des Monies, Iowa. The Warriors and Bulldogs will tip off at 6 p.m. in the Knapp Center. 

Winona State embarks on the 2023-24 season under the direction of head coach Ana Wurtz.  Leading the way for Wurtz and the Warriors is senior Alex Dornfeld who earned the NSIC Coaches Poll designation as the Player to Watch for WSU within the league. 

Wednesday's contest will be the second game for Drake on the year, with the Bulldogs having defeated former NSIC rival Upper Iowa 87-40 on Sunday.

  • The contest will take place in the Knapp Center. 
WINONA STATE STORYLINES
  • Winona State earned Special Mention status by the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Rolls this past August. 
  • WSU was 11-17 overall and 5-17 in NSIC play in 2022-23. 
  • Winona State was selected 12th in the 2023-24 NSIC Coaches Poll.
  • Wednesday's contest marks the second straight year WSU played a NCAA Division I school in Iowa. WSU lost at Iowa State last fall, 104-47.
  • Alex Dornfeld was tabbed as the Winona State Player to Watch in the NSIC Poll.
  • The 2023-24 WSU roster features three seniors, seven juniors, three sophomores and three freshman.
  • The addition of former Winona State standout Emily Kieck gives Winona State an all-alumnae coaching staff, with Wurtz, Hannah McClone and Kieck all former WSU players. 
  • McGlone heads into her second season as an assistant coach for Wurtz. McGlone also has college experience at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). 
  • The 2023-24 campaign is the 50th year of women's basketball at Winona State. 

Drake University STORYLINES
  • Drake won their first exhibition contest of the season, 87-40, last Sunday over Upper Iowa. 
  • After facing WSU, Drake will host the University of St. Thomas at home on Monday, Nov. 1. 
  • The Bulldogs were picked second in the MVC Coaches Poll. University of Northern Iowa was picked as the No. 1 team.
  • Grace Berg and Katie Dinnebier were tabbed as All-MVC Preseason First Team.
  • Anna Miller was a All-MVC Second Team selection in the preseason rankings. 
  • Head coach Allison Pohlman was named to her role on April 18, 2021. 
 
WARRIOR NOTABLES 
  • The Warriors were selected 12th overall in the 2023-24 NSIC Coaches Poll. This season marks the first single-division format within NSIC basketball. 
  • Head coach Ana Wurtz and assistant coaches Hannah McGlone and Emily Kieck are the only all-female coaching staff in the NSIC that also competed at their alma mater as student-athletes.
  • The first Winona State women's basketball season was in 1973-74, with the squad going 9-5 overall.
