Warrior Game Day : Volleyball

FAYETTE, Iowa -  The Winona State University volleyball team, coming off a 2-1 week last week that included a home sweep of Minot State and UMary, steps out of conference play this week to travel to Upper Iowa University. 


The Warriors and Peacocks will play Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. in a mid-week matchup. Both programs are on a two-match winning streak heading into Tuesday's showdown. 

Winona State enters play in Fayette with an 13-4 record and is fifth in the NSIC standings. Tuesday's match is a non-conference contest with the departure of Upper Iowa to the Great Lakes Valley Conference last year.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES 

  • Winona State is 13-4 overall and 6-3 in the NSIC.

  • WSU dropped their 2022 matchup with UIU, 3-1, on Oct. 25. 

  • Winona State has a 16-9 mark vs. UIU, dating back to Oct. 30, 2009.

  •  Rylee VaughnGianna VollrathSidney Paulson and Jaci Winchell all earned All-Tournament honors during the Warriors early season contests at Northern Michigan and Wisconsin Parkside, respectively. 

  • WSU was picked ninth in the 2023 NSIC Volleyball Coaches Poll. 

  • WSU narrowly missed out on an NSIC postseason bid last fall, finishing ninth with a 12-15 overall mark and 8-12 NSIC record.   

  • The Warriors played their first eight matches on the road, racking up a 7-1 record. 

  • WSU will feature seniors Rylee VaughnLydia LangeSidney Paulson, and Taylor Pagel this season.   

  • Sidney Paulson was selected as 2023 WSU's Player to Watch by the NSIC.

  • Heading into 2023, Getzin is No. 1 all-time at Winona State in winning percentage (.682) and second all-time in seasons at the school (9).  

  • WSU returns assistant coaches Kristine FischJackie Kiecker, and Mara Quam to the Warrior sideline this fall. 

Upper Iowa STORYLINES 

  • The Peacocks enter the match with an overall record of 7-8. 

  • Upper Iowa has a record of 9-20 vs. Winona State, dating back to Sep. 11, 2007

  • UIU has won their two most recent matches; 3-1 over Drury on Oct. 6 and 3-2 vs. Southwest Baptist on Oct. 7

  • In addition to the Warriors, Upper Iowa has played fellow former NSIC foe St. Cloud State this season, losing to the Huskies on Sep. 2 in Anchorage, Alaska.

  • Aaron Nelson enters his 13th season at Upper Iowa this fall.

  • Earlier this summer, Winona State earned its 17th consecutive AVCA Team Academic Award

  • WSU's 7-1 start fell just one win short of matching the 8-0 opening run of the 2021 NCAA Tournament Warrior team.

  • Sidney Paulson is 10th in the league in kills per set (3.31). 

  • Jaci Winchell is 8th in the NSIC in assists per set (10.85).
