WINONA, Minn. -
Lauren Fech tallied a career-high 27 points for the Winona State University women's basketball team on Saturday, Feb. 4, but Wayne State College did some damage from the free throw line late to steal a 60-56 win over the Warriors.
Fech was 9-of-14 overall from the floor and 4-of-7 from 3-point territory en route to one of the best WSU offensive performances of the season - and her career - but the Wildcats converted on some fourth-quarter opportunities to exit McCown Gymnasium with a NSIC victory.
Winona State was solid at the free throw line, knocking down 11-of-14 (78.6%) attempts, but shot just 18-of-48 (37.5) overall in the loss. While Fech had the hot hand for WSU, no other Warrior reached double-digits in scoring or rebounding as Wayne State worked back from a 15-point deficit to slide past WSU.
Although WSU owned a 29-23 advantage at the break, the visitors found a way back into the game and tied the contest at 52-52 in the fourth quarter. Wayne State then knocked down 3-of-4 free throws just under four minutes to play to take a narrow lead over Winona State. Althought Fech would connect on a pair of free throws for her final two points of the night moments later, but the Wildcats did just enough to hold WSU at bay the rest of the way.
WSC was led by Lauren Zacharias with 17 points. Kylah Vandonkersgoed also hit double-digits with 11 points in the game.
Winona State returns to the road next weekend, taking on the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, Feb. 10 and Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, Feb. 11.
