Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Pete Watkins

Winona State tennis shutout at home by Mavericks, 7-0

WINONA, Minn.  – The Winona State University women's tennis team forced several matchups into tiebreaker situations against Minnesota State Mankato on Friday, March 17, but ultimately were shut out 7-0 by the Mavericks.

Rachel Kelly and Ally Burger fell 7-5 at the No. 2 doubles slot in the tightest match at doubles play, while Minnesota State beat Winona State 6-3 at No. 1 and No. 3 singles to open the match.

All six singles levels would see Winona State lose to the visiting Mavericks, but the No. 5, No. 6 and No. 4 singles slots would go to tiebreaker sets to decide the outcome.

Miranda Daulong battled back but fell at No. 4 singles, losing 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 to MSU's Avery Stilwell. At No. 5 singles, Clara Thoemke lost in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 to Daria Podmogilaia. The third  match up to require a tiebreaker saw Ally Burger fall to MSU's McKenna DeMarce, 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 at No. 6 singles.

The No. 1 singles competition saw Beth Murman fall 3-6, 2-6 to Lois Page, while Sara Anderson suffered a 0-6, 2-6 setback to Chiara Carnelutti. Rachel Kelly lost 4-6, 3-6 to Freia Lawrence.

Winona State is next in action on Sunday, March 19 when they host Southwest Minnesota State. The Mustangs and Warriors are set for a 1:30 p.m. start time at the Winona Tennis Center.
