Baumgartner, Lingen earn NSIC Honors

WINONA, Minn. - As the Winona State University baseball program moves from the 2023 regular season into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) into postseason play, a pair of Warriors earned league honors this past week.

Drew Lingen, a freshman pitcher from Rochester, Minn. was named the NSIC Baseball Pitcher of the Week following an impressive complete-game shutout win over the University of Sioux Falls, and WSU standout Derek Baumgartner was tabbed as an NSIC All-Conference First Team selection by coaches around the league.

On Saturday, May 6, Lingen led Winona State to a 2-0 win over USF, holding the Cougars to just three hits in the seven-inning contest. Lingen struck out six, did not allow a walk in claiming second win of the season and securing a series win for the Warriors over USF.

Over the 2023 campaign, Baumgartner led Winona State in several key offensive statistical categories while also alternating between catcher and serving as the Warriors' designated hitter. The senior from Almond, Wis. finished the regular season with a .399 batting average and .458 on-base percentage, both tops in the team.

Baumgartner collected 21 doubles over the course of the season, leading the NSIC, while his .399 BA was fifth-best in the league. On two occasions, Baumgartner put together 4-for-4 days at the plate, first on April 2 against St. Cloud State and then again on April 7 against the University of Mary.

Lingen, Baumgartner and the Warrior squad are set to take on Minnesota State in the opening game of the 2023 NSIC Baseball Tournament on Wednesday, May 10.  The Warriors and Mavericks are set for a 6 p.m. start at BNC Field in Mandan, North Dakota.
