GREEN BAY, Wis. - A year ago at this time,
Lindsay Cunningham and the Winona State women's cross country team claimed individual and team first place honors respectively, beating a field of NCAA Division I and Division II program. On Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, they did it again.
Cunningham cruised to a championship time of 19:51.6, finishing ahead of Warrior teammate
Kaylee Beyer, who was second at 21:99.5. WSU's
Sophia Taarud was not far behind, taking fourth overall (22:11.5), giving Winona State three of the top five individual places. Michigan Tech's Hannah Loughlin (3rd, 22:01) and UW-Green Bay's Kelsey Radobicky (5th, 22:18.5) rounded out the top five.
Allison Kenefick finished seventh overall with a time of 22:25.8 and
Kylie Anderson was the fifth-highest Winona State finisher at 22:41.0, good for 11th place overall.
As a program, the Winona State women's team earned 24 total points, while Michigan Tech was second overall (64), just edging the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee was third (68).
In the men's race,
Mitchell Johnstone was the top Winona State runner, turning in a time of 25:30.3, good for eighth place.
Mitchell Buerkle cracked the top-50 with a time of 26:53, coming in 41st overall. As a team, WSU finished fifth among seven teams. Michigan Tech took top honors in the men's race with a team score of 40 points; MTU's Tucker Ringhand won the men's event at 25:02.5.
Both Winona State programs are next in action on Saturday, Sept. 16 when they travel to the University of Nebraska for the Greeno Dirksen open.
