WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team pulled out a close win against Maryville University, 62-60, in the home opener.
Coming out of the half up 36-28, the Warriors had just enough in the second half to hold on for the two-point victory.
How it Happened:
Finishing the first quarter up by four, the Warriors shot the ball 5-13 (38.46%) from the field. The score at the end of the first quarter was Warrior 14, Saints 10.
Despite trailing by four points at the end of the first, Maryville went on a scoring run to close the scoring gap, shooting 7-17 (41.18%) from the field. The score going into the half was Warriors 36, Saints 28.
Coming out of the half,
Vivica Bretton knocked down a mid-range jump shot that was shortly answered by a three-point attempt by Olivia Hahn. The Warriors ended the third quarter shooting 7-15 (46.67%) from the field with
Olivia Gamoke making a jump shot bringing the scoring total for Winona State to 16 points in the third quarter.
The Warriors scored the first points of the fourth quarter on a layup from Gamoke. The Saints had a chance to take the game into overtime with one second left on the clock but were unable to. Final score Warriors 62, Saints 60.
Individual Leaders:
- Leading the scoring for the Warriors was Gamoke with 21 points on 7-13 (53.84%) from the field, and for the Saints, Lindsey Schadewalt led the team with 23 points.
- Corralling the glass for Winona State was Sadie Jarmolowicz with seven, and for the Saints, Gracie Stugart led the team with 11 rebounds.
- Stugart also led the Saints in assists on the night with five, and for the Warriors, Mattie Schimenz and Jarmolowicz each recorded two assists.
- Holding down the defensive end for the Saints were Stugart, Schadewalt, and Caden Krohn who each recorded one steal, and for the Warriors, Hailey Markworth led the team in blocks with one.
Team Comparison:
- The Warriors shot 23-57 (40.4%) from the field, while the Saints shot 25-66 (37.9%).
- Winona State shot 8-28 (28.6%) from the three-point line, while Maryville University shot 6-22 (27.3%).
- The Saints corralled a total of 35 rebounds, while the Warriors recorded 41 rebounds. Both teams recorded ten offensive rebounds on the night.
- Both teams nearly shot near perfect from the free throw line, with the Saints shooting 4-6 (66.7%) and the Warriors shooting 8-10 (80%).
Winona State women's basketball will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, November 16th, to face off at 3:00pm in McCown Gymnasium against Truman State for the second game of the home opener weekend.
