WSU GOES 2-0 IN NONCONFERENCE WEEKEND

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team pulled out a close win against Truman State University, 70-64, to close out the home opener weekend.
 
Coming out of the half down 29-28, the Warriors scored 42 points in the second half to win by six points.
 
How it Happened:
 
Finishing the first quarter down by three, the Warriors shot the ball 5-18 (27.78%) from the field, while the Bulldogs shot the ball 5-16 (31.25%).
 
Despite trailing by three going into the second quarter, Winona State controlled the quarter, scoring five fast break points. A defensive rebound and a fast break layup by Mattie Schimenz brought the score within one going into the half, making it Bulldogs 29, Warriors 28.
 
Coming out of the half, Olivia Gamoke made a mid-range jumper on an assist from Vivica Bretton. Before the end of the third quarter, with a few seconds left on the clock, Bryar Duwe made a mid-range jump shot bringing the Bulldogs scoring total for the quarter to 18 points. The score at the end of the third quarter was tied at 47.
 
The Bulldogs scored the first points of the final quarter on a tip-in rebound from Jordan Cunningham. Clutch free throws from Schimenz and Sadie Jarmolowicz late led the Warriors to a 70-64 victory over the Bulldogs.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Leading the scoring for the Warriors was Gamoke with 19 points on 8-20 (40%) shooting from the field, and for the Bulldogs, Molly Joyce led the team with 23 points on 8-23 (34.78%) shooting from the field.
  • Corralling the glass for Truman State was Madison Niemeier with eight, and for Winona State, Jarmolowicz led the team with nine.
  • Leading the Warriors in the assists category was Bretton with five on the night, and for the Bulldogs, Cunningham led the team with three.
  • Holding down the defensive side for the Bulldogs was Joyce with two steals, and for the Warriors, Gamoke, Schimenz, Jarmolowicz, Bria Stenstrom, and Megan Schuman each recorded one steal.
Team Comparison:
  • The Warriors shot 26-62 (41.9%) from the field, while the Bulldogs shot 24-71 (33.8%).
  • Winona State shot 10-30 (33.3%) from the three-point line, while Truman State shot 4-20 (20%).
  • The Bulldogs shot a total of 13 free throws, missing one (92.3%), while the Warriors shot 10 free throws, missing two (80%).
  • Winona State recorded a total of 38 rebounds, with seven offensive and 31 defensive, while Truman State recorded a total of 34 rebounds, with nine offensive and 25 defensive. 
Winona State women's basketball will return to action on Friday, November 22nd, to face off at 6:00pm in McCown Gymnasium against Upper Iowa University.
