HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Winona State women's basketball team loses a close one against Michigan Tech, 71-66, in a nonconference matchup.
Coming out of the half up 32-23, the Warriors were not able to hold off the Huskies in the second half, ultimately losing in close fashion.
How it Happened:
Finishing the first quarter up by eight, the Warriors went 7-18 (38.89%) from the field, while the Huskies went 3-14 (21.43%). The score at the end of the first quarter was Winona State 16, Michigan Tech 8.
Despite giving up two fast break points in the first quarter, Winona State's defense only allowed one fast break point in the second quarter. A free throw from
Mattie Schimenz closed out the scoring for the Warriors in the first half. Going into the half, the Warriors up 32-23.
Coming out of the first half, a defensive rebound from
Vivica Bretton and an offensive rebound and putback from
Hailey Markworth got things going in the second half for Winona State. Trading baskets late in the third quarter, MTU's Ella Mason and WSU's Markworth went back and forth each making mid-range jump shots to close out the third quarter. A 23-point third quarter from the Huskies brought the teams within three points making the score at the end of the third quarter Winona State 49, Michigan Tech 46.
The Warriors started the scoring in the final quarter of the game with a three-pointer from
Sadie Jarmolowicz on an assist from Markworth. Late in the game, Winona State sent Michigan Tech to the free throw line but makes from Isabella Lenz and Kendall Standfest extended the lead increasing the scoring deficit. The final score at the end of the game was Michigan Tech 71, Winona State 66.
Individual Leaders:
- Leading the team in scoring for the Warriors was Markworth with 15 points on 7-17 (41.2%) shooting from the field, and for the Huskies, Standfest led the team in scoring with 16 points on 6-13 (46.2%).
- Collecting the rebounds for Michigan Tech was Standfest, who led the team with 11, and for Winona State, Markworth also led the team in rebounds with nine.
- Dishing out the assists for the Warriors were Jarmolowicz, Schimenz, and Olivia Gamoke who each recorded two assists, and for the Huskies, Lenz led the team in assists with four.
- Holding down the defensive side for Michigan Tech was Lenz who recorded three blocks and one steal, and for Winona State, Jarmolowicz led the team in steals with two.
Team Comparison:
- The Warriors shot 27-71 (38.0%) from the field, while the Huskies shot 24-59 (40.7%).
- Michigan Tech shot 7-22 (31.8%) from the three-point line, while Winona State shot 10-34 (29.4%).
- The Warriors went 2-4 (50.0%) from the free-throw line, while the Huskies went 16-23 (69.6%).
- Michigan Tech recorded a total of 45 rebounds, with 14 offensive and 31 defensive, while Winona State recorded a total of 40 rebounds, with 14 offensive and 26 defensive.
Winona State women's basketball will return to action when they face off against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponents Augustana University and Wayne State College. The matchup against Augustana University is on Friday, December 6th, at 5:30 pm in Sioux Falls, S.D., and the matchup against Wayne State College is on Saturday, December 7th, at 3:30pm in Wayne, Neb.
