WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team faced off against Central College in their second pre-season exhibition game in McCown Gymnasium, winning 90-62.
The game remained close throughout, with the Warriors pulling away in the final quarter. The Central Dutch are led by Justin Weiland.
How it Happened:
Narrowly pulling away at the end of the first quarter, the Warrior's scoring was evenly spread out, with
Olivia Gamoke,
Mattie Schimenz,
Sadie Jarmolowicz,
Paige Peaslee, and
Vivica Bretton all contributing to the scoring in the first. The score at the end of the first was Warriors 21, Central Dutch 18.
Despite allowing eight points off turnovers, Winona State continued to battle throughout the first half, recording two offensive rebounds and shooting 83.3% from the free throw line in the second quarter. A layup by
Hailey Markworth brought the Warriors lead to eight points going into the half.
Central scored the first points of the second half with a three-pointer, but the Warriors answered back with a floating jump shot from Markworth. The Warriors controlled much of the third quarter heading into the fourth, leading 66-55.
Controlling the final quarter of the game, the Warriors held Central to seven points. Winona State finished the quarter 5-14 from the three-point line and 86.7% from the field.
Individual Leaders
- Gamoke and Markworth each recorded 20 points on the night with Gamoke shooting 7-14 and Markworth shooting 8-12 for the night.
- Markworth, Bretton, Stephanie Dasbach, and Lydia Lakanen each recorded one block. CeCe Moore recorded two blocks leading the Central Dutch.
- Lindsey Hahn led the Warriors off the bench with nine points on a 3-7 shooting beyond the three-point line.
- Samantha Scott and Hannah Dau led Central in assists with each recording three on the night.
Team Comparison
- Central shot 40.4% (21-52) from the field while the Warriors shot 45.7% (32-70).
- Central led Winona State from the three-point line, going 10-26 (38.5%) compared to WSU's 13-35 (37.1%).
- The Warriors forced 19 turnovers while committing 9 themselves.
- Winona State dominated the offensive glass, recording 17. It was more even defensively, with WSU grabbing 21 defensive rebounds and Central College grabbing 20.
Winona State will return to action on Friday, November 8th, when they head to Alva, Oklahoma, to compete in the GAC-NSIC Conference Challenge. On Friday, they will play Northwestern Oklahoma State, and on Saturday, November 9th, they will compete against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Tip-off for Friday's contest against Northwestern Oklahoma State is set for 5:30pm.
