ALVA, Okla. – The Winona State women's basketball team fell short against Northwestern Oklahoma State in the first game of the GAC-NSIC Conference Challenge.
Falling to a 16-point deficit coming out of the half, the Warriors made a tough push to score 48 points in the second but ultimately fell short.
How It Happened:
Pulling ahead in the first quarter, the Rangers shot the ball well, going 7-13 (53.85%) from the field. The score at the end of the first quarter was Rangers 15, Warriors 4.
Despite allowing six points off turnovers in the second quarter, the Warriors held the Rangers to only two points in the second. A layup by
Vivica Bretton towards the end of the quarter helped the Warriors drop the point differential going into the half.
The Rangers scored the first points of the second half with a tip-in layup, but the Warriors answered back with a layup from Bretton and a jump shot from
Hailey Markworth. Each team scoring 25 points in the third quarter brought the score to Rangers 57, Warriors 43.
Going into the final quarter of the game, the Warriors held the Rangers to 2-7 (28.57%) shooting from beyond the three-point line. The Warriors ended the fourth quarter shooting 7-10 (70%) from the free-throw line and 7-17 (41.18%) from the field.
Individual Leaders:
- Leading the scoring for the Rangers was Kira Bass with 20 points, and for the Warriors, Bretton led the team with 16 points on 7-15 shooting.
- Bretton also led the Warriors in rebounds with 10, and for the Rangers, Summya Adigun led with 8.
- Leading the team in assists for the Warriors was Mattie Schimenz with five, and for the Rangers, Kennedy Hight led with 6.
- Jarmolowicz led the Warriors in steals with two, and for the Rangers, they had four players record one steal.
- Leading the team in blocks for the Rangers was Camille Thomas with one and for the Warriors Lydia Lakanen with one.
Team Comparison:
- Winona State shot the ball 21-58 (36.2%) from the field while Northwestern Oklahoma State shot 31-64 (48.4%).
- Both the Warriors and the Rangers each shot 37.5% from beyond the three-point line.
- The Warriors recorded five steals, while the Rangers recorded four.
- Rangers shot 11 times from the free throw line, making 7, while the Warriors shot 19 times from the free throw line, making 15.
Winona State will return to action tomorrow Saturday, November 9th, for the second day of the GAC-NSIC Conference Challenge to face off against Southeastern Oklahoma State. The tip-off for Saturday's contest is set for 3:30pm.
