WINONA, Minn. – Winona State football travels to Marshall, Minn. for an 11:00am kickoff against Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, November 9 in the "Battle for the Sledge."
The Warriors (4-5, 4-4 NSIC) will look to rebound after a heartbreaking loss to Minnesota Duluth last week. The Mustangs (0-9, 0-8 NSIC) dropped their last contest to UMary at home. Winona State has won the last six meetings between the two teams, including a 43-7 victory in the most recent meeting in 2022.
Saturday's contest will be the eighth meeting in the "Battle for the Sledge", presented by Game One and Adidas. Winona State leads 6-1 since the trophy game was started in 2015.
Winona State Notes:
- Winona State fell to Minnesota Duluth last week, 42-38, bringing them to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the NSIC.
- Cole Stenstrom went 19-31 passing with 223 yards and 2 touchdowns with his longest completion being 52 yards.
- Lincoln Snitker and Conner Haggerty led the team in tackles each with a total of nine. Haggerty, Trey Borske, and Kyjuan Vengrowsky each had one tackle for loss and Vengrowsky recorded one sack.
- Sylvere Campbell hauled in eight catches against UMD, tying a season-high. Campbell is third in the league averaging 76.8 receiving yards per game.
- WSU averages 368.4 yards of offense each game and allows just 336.3 yards to opponents.
- Winona State has the fourth-best pass defense in the NSIC, allowing just 176.1 yards per game through the air to opponents per game.
- Winona State special teams have been a key part to success this season. WSU is first in the NSIC averaging 14 yards per punt return and is the only team to have a punt return touchdown. The Warriors are second on kickoff returns, averaging 25.1 yards/return.
- Following this week's game, the Warriors are away against Minot State for a 1:00pm kickoff in Minot, ND. on Saturday, November 16 to conclude the season.
Southwest Minnesota State Notes:
- The Mustangs have yet to put a tally in the win column this year and average just 5.78 points per game.
- On defense, SMSU allows 37.11 points/game and 368.4 yards/game to opponents.
- Jacob Honstetter leads SMSU with 37.63 rushing yards/game. Kendon Krogman adds on 24.13.
- Krogman and Wyatt Oak split duties under center last week with Krogman going 5-9 and passing for 53 yards and Oak throwing for 42 yards on 5-10 passing with one interception.
- Colin Maher is the leading receiver for the Mustangs, hauling in 263 yards and three touchdowns on the season.
- Josiah Hendensten has garnered 73 tackles, including 8.5 TFL and 3.0 sacks with three forced fumbles to lead the defensive unit.
