WARRIORS RECORD FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON AGAINST THE SAVAGE STORM

ALVA, Okla. – The Winona State women's basketball team records its first win of the season against Southeastern Oklahoma State 61-53 in their last game of the GAC-NSIC Conference Challenge.
 
Coming out of halftime down 28-26, the Warriors ran with the lead, scoring 35 in the second half while holding the savage storm to 25.
 
How It Happened:
 
Finishing the first quarter up by two the Warriors shot the ball near perfect going 6-7 (85.71%) from the field. The score at the end of the first quarter was Warriors 14, Savage Storm 12.
 
Despite trailing by two points at the end of the first, Southeastern Oklahoma State went on a scoring run to give them the lead at the end of the second quarter. The score going into the half was Savage Storm 28, Warriors 26.
 
Coming out of the half, Mattie Schimenz was fouled on a three-point attempt where she made all three free throws. The Warriors in the third quarter would go on to shoot 7-16 (43.75%) from the field with Hailey Markworth making a jump shot bringing the scoring total for Winona State to 20 points in the third quarter.
 
The Warriors scored first to start the fourth quarter with a three-pointer from Olivia Gamoke on an assist from Vivica Bretton. Each team scored 15 points in the fourth, with the Savage Storm shooting 5-17 (29.41%) from the field and the Warriors shooting 6-9 (66.67%).
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Leading the scoring for the Warriors was Gamoke with 19 points on 7-10 (70%) shooting from the field, and for the Savage Storm, Kenzli Warden led the team with 15 points.
  • Corralling the glass for Winona State was Paige Peaslee and Lindsey Hahn who each recorded six rebounds on the night, for Southeastern Oklahoma State, Caitlin Kobiske led the team with seven.
  • Kobiske also led the Savage Storm in assists with four, and for the Warriors, Bretton led the team in assists with four.
  • Holding down the defensive side for the Savage Storm were Kobiske and Stevie Stinchcomb who each recorded two steals, and for the Warriors, Gamoke, Schimenz, and Markworth each recorded one steal.
  • Anchoring the paint for the Warriors was Sadie Jarmolowicz who recorded two blocks, Stinchcomb also led the Savage Storm in blocks with one.
Team Comparison:
  • The Warriors shot 24-47 (51.1%) from the field, while the Savage Storm shot 19-64 (29.7%).
  • Shooting close to 50% from beyond the three-point line, The Warriors shot 10-22 (45.5%), and the Savage Storm shot 7-29 (24.1%).
  • The Savage Storm recorded seven steals while the Warriors recorded three.
  • Both teams each shot 100% from the free throw line, with the Savage Strom going 8-8 and the Warriors going 3-3.
Winona State women's basketball will return to action Friday, November 15th, to face off at 6:00pm in McCown Gymnasium against Maryville University in the home opener.
