WINONA STATE WINS IN OVERTIME THRILLER

DULUTH, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team wins in overtime thriller against NSIC conference opponent Minnesota Duluth 67-65.
 
The entire contest was neck and neck, with the teams trading baskets up until the end. An offensive rebound and a pair of clutch free throws from Hailey Markworth late in overtime led the Warriors past the Bulldogs.
 
How it Happened:
Winona State recorded the first two points of the contest on a jump shot from Vivica Bretton. In the final seconds of the first quarter, Megan Schuman followed Mattie Schimenz's layup for a tip-in layup to bring the score to WSU 13, UMD 9.
 
Trading baskets back and forth during the second quarter, Minnesota Duluth recorded 21 points on 8-17 (47.1%) shooting from the field, and Winona State recorded 16 points on 6-17 (35.3%) shooting from the field.
 
Coming out of the half, the Bulldogs recorded the first points with a jump shot from Johanna Miller on an assist from Myra Moorjani. A jump shot from Claire Bjorge closed out the scoring in the third quarter bringing the score to UMD 44, WSU 36.
 
The Warriors scored the first points in the fourth quarter with a three-point attempt from Olivia Gamoke on an assist from Markworth. Late down the stretch, no team was able to get an edge on the other bringing the fourth quarter to a close with a tie at 55.
 
Much like regulation, overtime was neck and neck with each team trading baskets. Late in overtime Markworth got an offensive rebound off of Megan Schuman's missed free throw and was sent to the free throw line where she made both to bring the lead to four. Winona State was able to hold off Minnesota Duluth to win in overtime 67-65.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Leading the Warriors in scoring was Markworth with 27 points on 10-22 (45.5%) shooting from the field, and for the Bulldogs, Miller led the team with 20 points on 8-13 (61.5%) shooting from the field.
  • Lexi Karlen led Minnesota Duluth in rebounds with 12, and for Winona State, Sadie Jarmolowicz led the team with 10.
  • Leading the Warriors in assists was Markworth with three, and for the Bulldogs, Moorjani led the team with five.
  • Karlen also led Minnesota Duluth in steals with two, and for Winona State, Gamoke and Jarmolowicz led the team each recording two.
  • Holding down the middle for the Warriors was Jarmolowicz with two blocks, and for the Bulldogs, Miller, Bjorge, and Karlen led the team each recording two blocks. 
Team Comparison:
  • Winona State went 23-68 (33.8%) from the field while Minnesota Duluth went 24-74 (32.4%).
  • The Bulldogs went 4-22 (18.2%) from beyond the three-point line while the Warriors went 8-26 (30.8%).
  • Winona State went 13-19 (68.4%) from the free-throw line while Minnesota Duluth went 13-16 (81.3%).
  • The Bulldogs recorded a total of 47 rebounds, with 14 offensive and 33 defensive, while the Warriors recorded a total of 48 rebounds, with 13 offensive and 35 defensive.
Winona State will return to action on Saturday, December 21st, to face off against #13 Minnesota State University, Mankato. Tip-off is set for 1:00pm in McCown Gymnasium.
