Peter Tveite and
Kole Hinrichsen led the Winona State University baseball team to a key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader sweep on Friday, March 29, as WSU extended their winning streak to six games in the cozy confines of Loughrey Field.
WSU beat UMary in the front half of a site-reversed NSIC series, collecting 8-1 and 8-3 Warrior wins behind stellar efforts on the mound from Tveite and Hinrichsen. Winona State held the NCAA Division II leaders in homers to just three runs across two games and limited the Marauders to just one double among their eight base hits on the day.
While the Warrior pitching staff was dialed in from the start in both games, the WSU offense enjoyed a
Cole Fuecker home run, a
Mason Trocke triple and four doubles en route to a strong start for head coach
Seth Wing and the Warriors.
Game 1: Winona State 8, UMary 1 | Peter Tveite - one week removed from the second-ever WSU perfect game - went the distance in the 7-inning victory, holding UMary to just four hits in the contest. Tveite recorded four strike outs, walked just two, and held the Marauders to a second-inning double as the only extra-base hit for UMary in the contest.
The Winona State offense was led by
Cole Fuecker whose two-run home run in the third inning broke open the contest. WSU was up 2-0 following a series of UMary miscues in the third and Fuecker found the right launch angle in a stiff center field wind to put a Lukas Frers offering onto the railroad tracks in left field, giving WSU a lead they would not relenquish.
Kyle Yu and
Josh Gullickson would add doubles as WSU collected nine base hits in the series-opening win. Tveite would rack up three 1-2-3 innings and WSU registered double plays in the fifth and sixth innings to pace Winona State to the 8-1 victory.
Game 2: Winona State 8,UMary 2 | Kole Hinrichsen went six innings deep in his game two start against UMary, eventually earning the win after holding the Marauders to three hits, no runs while striking out four. Boyd Skelly and
Mason Beltrand combined for an impressive effort from the Warrior bullpen, tossing a one-hit effort over the final nine Marauder at-bats to close out the victory.
WSU saw
Mason Trocke hit a triple, a double, and score three runs as the Warriors pulled away from UMary with a five-run third inning. Overall, Winona State tallied eight runs on six hits in the victory.
Winona State (11-13, 8-6 NSIC) will face off with the University of Mary in pursuit of a second-consecutive NSIC series sweep on Saturday, March 30. WSU and UMary will see first pitch at noon in Loughrey Field
