Winona State baseball falls to Mavericks on the road

MANKATO, Minn. - The Winona State University baseball team dropped both ends of an NSIC doubleheader on the road at Minnesota State, falling 6-3 in game one and losing 11-1 in the nightcap.

Winona State scored first against MSU in the opening contest but back-to-back three-run innings dealt the Warriors a setback. In game two, the Mavericks plated three runs in the first, fourth and fifth frames to complete the sweep.

Game 1: Mavericks 6, Winona State 3 | Logan LeTourneau threw an effective first four innings for WSU, striking out three Mavericks without allowing a walk, but the Warrior bats were held in check by MSU. A brief relief stint by Chandler Schmidt was followed with an appearance by Theo Giedd on the Warrior mound. Alex Berreth led WSU with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate, including a double. Jess Ondell and Jack Funke both collected RBI in the contest.

Game 2: Mavericks 11, Winona State 1 | Ryland Wall singled home Nathan Osborne in the third inning to help WSU respond to a three-run Maverick first frame, but the score would be the only tally of the game for WSU. Warrior starter Sawyer Hoffman went 3 and 1/3 innings and took the loss. WSU ran through three middle-inning relievers before Nevin Wall wrapped up the contest for Winona State. As a staff, WSU struck out four, walked five and conceded 11 runs, all earned. Austin Beyer had the only extra-base hit in the game for the Warriors, a double in the seventh inning.

Winona State (13-19, 10-12 NSIC) is next in action on Saturday, April 13, hosting Augustana University in a three-game series in the cozy confines of Loughrey Field. First pitch between the Warriors and Vikings is set for 1:30 p.m.
