Winona State women's tennis falls to UMary in NSIC Tournament

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Winona State University women's tennis team season came to an end on Friday, April 26, after falling to the University of Mary in the opening round of the 2024 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tennis Tournament.

The Warriors reached the NSIC Tournament following a 8-8 regular season finish and were seeded seventh in the competition.  WSU earned the opening doubles point, but the second-seeded Marauders rebounded to claim four singles points and avoid the upset.

Winona State secured victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to earn the doubles point. At number two doubles, Halle Rosentreter and Lainy Ristau earned a 6-2 win over Hala Hossam-Awad and Maria Estinvil. The WSU victory was followed in short order with another Warrior win, as Ally Burger and Miranda Daulong combined to defeat UMary's Luba Moyo and Emily Needham at the No. 3 doubles level. Sara Anderson and Skylar Gary were leading UMary's Chloe Chong and Iiona Frietag 5-4 prior to the WSU win in doubles competition.

However, despite the bright start for head coach Tom Sanvik and WSU, singles play saw UMary pull away.  The Warriors dropped decisions at No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 4 singles en route to the season-finishing loss. WSU's Halle Rosentreter fell in No. 2 singles competition to Halla Hossam-Awad 6-1, 6-2, while Warrior teammate Lainy Ristau was dealt a 6-3, 6-1 setback by Ilona Freitag at No. 3 singles. Winona State's Clara Thoemke was defeated by UMary's Emily Needham, 6-1, 7-5 and UMary finished the match with a win at No. 4 singles, as the Mauraders' Maria Estinvil beat WSU's Skylar Gary 6-4, 6-2.

WSU finished the 2024 campaign with a 4-5 overall record. The Warriors resided seventh in the ten-team regular season standings; UMary advanced to face Minnesota State, Mankato on Saturday, April 27.
