Box Score 2 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Winona State University baseball team earned a pair of important wins on Saturday, beating the University of Sioux Falls in an NSIC doubleheader by 8-3 and 9-7 scorelines. Due to predicted weather for Sunday, the Cougars - Warriors third contest has been moved to a 4 p.m. start in Sioux Falls.
Winona State and Sioux Falls entered play Saturday tied in the eighth spot of the NSIC standings but impactful play from
Josh Gullickson and
Peyton Lee helped lead WSU to the two-game sweep.
Game 1 Winona State 8, USF 3 | Winona State moved out to a 4-3 lead after three innings of play behind a strong starting effort on the Warrior mound by
Peter Tveite. Tveite scattered seven hits across 5 and 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking just two. Relief efforts by
Theo Giedd and
Boyd Skelley allowed WSU to close out the contest for the win.
Alex Berreth and
Josh Gullickson each added a home run to the WSU effort, with Gullickson's three-run homer a major impact on the Winona State four-run sixth inning which allowed the visitors to pull away. Josh Hawksford added two hits, as did
Ben Hefel. Hefel had a double among his base hits. WSU turned a pair of key double plays in the contest.
Game 2 Winona State 9, USF 7 (10-innings) | WSU used a three home run outing in the nightcap to claim the doubleheader sweep over USF.
Cole Fuecker,
Mason Trocke and
Josh Gullickson all hit home runs against the Cougars while the Warrior bullpen kept the Cougars off-balance. Gullickson would finish the day with two home runs in the doubleheader.
WSU used five pitchers in the contest, with starter
Kole Hinrichsen earning the start and going four and 2/3 innings.
Peyton Lee threw the final three innings, with
Cole Stanchina,
Drew Lingen and
Andrew Regner all making middle-inning relief appearances.
USF and WSU were tied 7-7 after nine innings but Winona State was able to plate a pair of runs in the top of the 10th and hold the Cougars scoreless in the bottom of the final frame. Lee ordered up a 1-2-3 final at-bats for USF in the 10th, including a game-ending strike out of Tyler Cate.
Winona State (19-25, 16-18 NSIC) and Sioux Falls (21-23, 14-20 NSIC) are scheduled to compete their 3-game NSIC series on Sunday, April 28, weather-permitting.
