WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University baseball team was dealt a pair of setbacks by the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday, falling to the Golden Eagles by 6-3 and 5-1 scorelines.
Game 1: UMC 6, Winona State 3 | WSU scored the opening run of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the visiting Golden Eagles responded with a three-run fourth inning to earn an advantage they would maintain in claiming the victory in the 7-inning affair.
At the plate, Winona State was led by
Cole Fuecker, who had a pair of doubles and was 3-for-4 in the contest.
Joshua Hawksford and
Austin Beyer both added extra-base hits to the WSU effort.
On the Warrior mound,
Peter Tveite started and threw 5 and 2/3 innings, racking up six strikeouts.
Boyd Skelley and
Drew Lingen both saw brief relief appearances before yielding to
Theo Giedd. The WSU staff conceded six runs on six hits, all earned.
Game 2: UMC 5, Winona State 1 | Winona State and Minnesota Crookston battled for two scoreless innings before the Golden Eagles plated three runs in the top of the third inning. WSU would respond with a single score in the fourth but the Warrior bats would go cold in the remaining innings.
Offensively,
Jess Ondell went 2-for-4, and
Austin Beyer collected a double, the only Warrior extra-base hit.
WSU starter
Kole Hinrichsen pitched the first six innings of the game, followed by a trio of middle-inning relievers:
Peyton Lee,
Boyd Skelley, and
Cole Stanchina.
Sawyer Hoffman wrapped up the game with a 1-2-3 inning for WSU.
Winona State and Minnesota Crookston will wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader set for a noon start on Saturday, April 6 in the cozy confines of Loughrey Field.
