WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University volleyball team defeated Upper Iowa University in their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 10, beating the Peacocks in straight sets, 3-0.
Winona State (3-2, 0-0 NSIC) took little time to dispatch Upper Iowa (2-3, 0-0 GLVC), making the overall record against UIU 18-9 dating back to Oct. 30 2009.
 
The Warriors started off strong with 
Sidney Paulson, WSU volleyball's newest 1,000 kill club member got the first kill of the set. The Warriors then set the tone the rest of set one with sophomore 
Kenna Kornely leading the way with five kills.
 
Set two began with the Peacocks taking an early 11-5 lead before the Warriors would surge a comeback led by 
Gianna Vollrath, 
Sidney Paulson, and 
Lydia Lange. The Warriors would take their first lead of the set at 22-21 before finishing the set 25-22.
 
In set three WSU battled back and forth with the Peacocks before taking charge and scoring six straight points to end the match, winning the set 25-17 and taking the match 3-0.
 
Leading the Warriors offensively was 
Kenna Kornely with 13 total points and 12 kills. Another balanced attack from Warrior teammates 
Jaci Winchell and 
Ashlyn Steding on the assist sheet with 23 and 16 assists respectively. 
Abigail Savatski recorded 3 blocks and one block assist in the match as well, leading the Warriors defensively.
 
Winona State (3-2, 0-0 NSIC) is next in action Friday, September 13 at 2:30 p.m. against Malone University (2-2, 0-0 GMAC) at the Quincy Hawk Invitational where they will face off against four teams in two days.
