LIBERTY, Mo. – The Winona State University volleyball team competed over three days, playing four games at the Kansas City Classic. The Warriors claimed a 2-2 record during their trip. WSU beat William Jewel in the first match 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-22) but the next day fell to Washburn University 0-3 (10-25, 12-25, 16-25). Winona State volleyball then went on to beat Rockhurst in a five set thriller 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 15-20) before falling in the final match of the Kansas City Classic to Emporia State 0-3 (25-16, 25-22, 25-16).
Winona State's
Sidney Paulson earned her 1,000th kill in a 3-2 win against Rockhurst University. Making her the 15th Winona State volleyball player ever to reach that feat.
Winona State 3, William Jewel 0
The Warriors started their season with a clean sweep facing off against William Jewel to open the Kansas City Classic. WSU would be led by graduate student
Sidney Paulson with 11 kills in the game, shortly followed by
Kenna Kornely, the only other Warrior to reach double figures in in kills (10).
Ashlyn Steding and
Jaci Winchell would pace the Warriors with 20 and 18 assists respectively and
Kylie Welch would lead the team with 19 digs.
Washburn 3, Winona State 0
The Warriors would start out day two facing off against a tough Washburn team and coming up short in a three-set match. Offensively, the Warriors were led by
Sidney Paulson with seven kills,
Jayda Berg with five and
Gianna Vollrath with four.
Jaci Winchell and
Ashlyn Steding would have another balanced attack on the assist sheet with 11 and 10 each. The balanced Ichabod attack was too much for WSU falling 10-25, 12-25, and 16-25.
Winona State 3, Rockhurst 2
The Winona State volleyball team would battle back on the same day and face off against Rockhurst in a thrilling five set match. The Warriors Battled hard after falling short the first set 20-25 before taking three of the next four in the match. In this five set match the Warriors were led with 23 kills by
Sidney Paulson who earned her 1,000 kill of her career. Other Warriors reaching double digits in kills was
Kenna Kornely (11) and
Lydia Lange (10). Leading the Warriors in blocks was
Abigail Savatski (9) shortly trailed by sophomore
Jayda Berg (8).
Emporia State 3, Winona State 0
In the final match of the Kansas City Classic the Warriors faced off against a tough Emporia State squad. Winona State would battle hard but come up short losing 3-0, good for a 2-2 start to the 2024 season.
Kenna Kornely would lead the charge with seven kills, followed shortly by
Lydia Lange with six.
Jaci Winchell led the team in assists (12) and
Ashlyn Steding would collect three services aces in the match.
At the conclusion of the Kansas City Classic graduate student and newest 1,000 kill club member
Sidney Paulson was named to the 2024 Kansas City Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team. Paulson was named one of seven athletes named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Winona State volleyball team is next in action at McCown Gymnasium home of WNB Financial Court on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 6pm to face off against former NSIC travel partner and opponent Upper Iowa
