WINONA STATE FALLS SHORT IN NAIL BITER

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University women's basketball team started off their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) weekend facing off against the University of Minnesota Crookston, losing in heartbreaking fashion 80-79.
 
Vivica Bretton led Winona State in scoring with 22 points, going 10-12 (83.3%) from the field, Warriors from the field in today's matchup went 32-64 (50%).
 
How it Happened:
 
Winona State scored the game's first points with a tip-in layup from Megan Schuman. The first quarter was back-and-forth, with each team trading baskets. The quarter ended with a layup from Minnesota Crookston's Rayna Klejeski, bringing the score to UMC 25, WSU 20.
 
The second quarter began with UMC picking up where they left off with a layup from Willow Thiel. Coming back from the deficit in the first quarter, the Warriors would go on to shoot 11-15 (73.3%) from the field in the second, bringing the score at the end of the first half to WSU 46, UMC 38.
 
Minnesota Crookston got the scoring going in the second half with a three-pointer from Emma Miller, assisted by Riley Jenkins. Going back and forth in the third quarter the Golden Eagles would go onto close out the quarter on a two-point jumper from Miller. The score at the end of the third was UMC 62, WSU 55.
 
Winona State recorded the first points of the fourth quarter on a layup from Mattie Schimenz. Coming down to the wire, Minnesota Crookston was able to push the lead to four with two free throws from Hope Dudycha. With a few seconds remaining, Olivia Gamoke made a three-pointer as time expired to bring the deficit to one. At the end of the game, the score was UMC 80, WSU 79.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Hailey Markworth led the Warriors in minutes with 36 and Bretton led in points with 22 on 10-12 (83.3%) shooting from the field.
  • Schimenz led WSU in assists with five.
  • Sadie Jarmolowicz led Winona State in rebounds with nine and steals with three.
  • Miller led UMC in scoring with 23.
  • Nicole Hernandez led Minnesota Crookston in rebounds with 11.
