WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team ended the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) weekend facing off against Minnesota State University Moorhead, losing 69-47.
Sadie Jarmolowicz led the charge for the Warriors, scoring a team-high 13 points on 4-8 (50%) shooting from the field. She also recorded three rebounds, and two blocks on the night.
How it Happened:
MSUM scored the first points of the contest with a jump shot from Ashton Safranski. The Dragons started the game off hot, recording the first 10 points. Winona State's
Mattie Schimenz got the Warriors on the board with a jump shot assisted by
Vivica Bretton. MSUM's Abby Berge recorded the final points of the quarter with a layup assisted by Karlee Fisher. The score at the end of the first quarter was MSUM 20, WSU 11.
The scoring in the second quarter began with a free throw from Fisher. A three-pointer late in the quarter from Winona State's
Olivia Gamoke, assisted by Schimenz, brought the score differential to 10. The first half ended with a jump shot from WSU's
Paige Peaslee assisted by Bretton. The score at the end of the half was MSUM 37, WSU 25.
The Dragons recorded the first points of the second half with a layup from Berge. WSU's defense only allowed MSUM to go 2-10 (20%) from beyond the arc in the third quarter. A steal from
Bria Stenstrom, followed by a fast break layup, brought the score differential to within 11 points. The score at the end of the quarter was MSUM 55, WSU 41.
A steal from MSUM's Ashley Fritz, followed by a layup from Terry Johnson, assisted by Natalie Jens, began the scoring in the final quarter of the contest. The Dragons would continue to increase the lead, shooting 5-7 (71.4%) from the free-throw line. A three from MSUM's Emily Srejma, assisted by Deja Davis, closed out the scoring for the contest, bringing the final score to Dragons 69, Warriors 47.
Individual Leaders:
- Jarmolowicz led the Warriors in scoring with 13 points on 4-8 (50%) shooting from the field.
- Bretton, Schimenz, and Hailey Markworth led Winona State in assists, each recording three.
- Stephanie Dasbach led WSU in steals with two.
- Jens and Berge led the Dragons in scoring each with 21.
- Berge also led MSUM in rebounds with 13.
Team Comparison:
- WSU went 17-58 (29.3%) from the field, while MSUM went 27-65 (41.5%).
- The Dragons went 8-31 (25.8%) from the three-point line, while the Warriors went 6-32 (18.8%).
- WSU went 7-9 (77.8%) from the free throw line, while MSUM went 7-11 (63.6%).
- The Dragons recorded a total of 49 rebounds, with 15 offensive and 34 defensive, while the Warriors recorded a total of 31 rebounds, with seven offensive and 24 defensive.
Winona State will return to action on Saturday, January 25th, to face off against Northern State University on the road. Tip-off is set for 6:00pm in Aberdeen, S.D.
