WINONA STATE FALLS TO NORTHERN STATE ON THE ROAD

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Winona State women's basketball team loses road contest against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opponent Northern State University 85-73.
 
Hailey Markworth led the charge for the Warriors, scoring a team-high 20 points on 9-17 (52.9%) shooting from the field. She also recorded six rebounds, four assists, and one steal on the night.
 
How it Happened:
 
Winona State scored the first points of the contest with a jump shot from Megan Schuman, assisted by Markworth. The first quarter remained close, with no team gaining a clear edge. With a minute remaining, Northern State's Madelyn Bragg gave them the lead with a jump shot, bringing the score at the end of the quarter to NSU 18, WSU 16.
 
Bragg picked up where she left off, scoring the first eight points of the second quarter for the Wolves. Paige Peaslee scored the last points in the quarter for the Warriors with a jump shot. The score going into halftime was NSU 45, WSU 29.
 
Winona State scored the first points of the second half with a jump shot from Markworth. The Warriors made a push in the third quarter, shooting 11-19 (57.89%) from the field, 2-3 (66.7%) from the beyond the arc and from the free throw line. The scoring in the quarter ended with a free throw from Winona State's Mattie Schimenz. Going into the final quarter of the contest, the score was NSU 65, WSU 55.
 
A steal from WSU's Sadie Jarmolowicz leading to a made free throw from Markworth began the scoring in the fourth quarter. The Wolves would continue to increase the lead, shooting 3-7 (42.9%) from beyond the arc. A jump shot from Markworth closed out the scoring for the contest, bringing the final score to Wolves 85, Warriors 73.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • Markworth led the Warriors in scoring with 20 on 9-17 (52.9%) shooting from the field. She also led the team in assists with four.
  • Vivica Bretton, Schuman, and Markworth led Winona State in rebounds, each recording six.
  • Jarmolowicz, Peaslee, and Markworth led WSU in steals, each recording one.
  • Michaela Jewett led the Wolves in scoring with 25 and in rebounds with 12.
