WARRIORS EARN 57-53 VICTORY AT HOME AGAINST MINNESOTA DULUTH

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's basketball team got the win inside McCown Gymnasium defeating the Bulldogs from the University of Minnesota Duluth 57-53. 

Winona State outrebounded UMD 43-36 in the contest with Olivia Gamoke leading the Warriors in scoring with 15. 

How it Happened: 

Hailey Markworth would score the first points of the contest, with WSU jumping out to an early lead. Vivica Bretton had a big first quarter scoring five of the Warriors 11 points with Winona State up 11-10. 

Starting the second frame off strong Olivia Gamoke knocked down two shots from beyond the arc battling early with the Bulldogs. Minnesota Duluth tied the game at 17-17 with Winona State ending the half on a pivotal 13-2 run taking an eight-point lead going into the half. 

Half two began with both teams trading points early with the Bulldogs chipping away the lead to one point after a Vanessa Bickford three-pointer. With multiple lead changes from then on out WSU saw themselves up three points after a Markworth layup to end the third quarter. 

The fourth quarter began, and the Warriors saw a lead of as much as five points from another shot from beyond the arc from Gamoke. Just before the final media timeout in the contest, Minnesota Duluth tied the game up at 48 a piece. With time winding down, the Warriors extended their lead enough for the game to come down to the charity stripe, with Olivia Gamoke, Sadie Jarmolowicz, Vivica Bretton, and Mattie Schimenz sealing the game knocking down free throws. 

Statistical Leaders: 

  • Olivia Gamoke led Winona State with 15 points also collecting three rebounds and one block. 
  • Vivica Bretton finished the contest with 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. 
  • Megan Schuman collected a team high nine rebounds. 
  • Maria Counts had 15 points to lead UMD in the contest. 

Team Comparisons: 

  • Winona State forced 17 Bulldog turnovers compared to UMD's ten. 
  • WSU shot 31.7% from the field and 35.7% from three-point range while UMD shot 41.2% from the floor and 36.4% from beyond the arc. 
  • The Warriors had 28 points in the paint while Minnesota Duluth collected 20. 
  • There were six lead changes in the contest and six times the score was tied. 


The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, February 1 where they face off against Minnesota State University, Mankato on the road at 3pm.
