WSU DROPS CONTEST AGAINST MINOT STATE 68-61

MINOT, N.D. - The Winona State University women's basketball team started off their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) weekend facing off against Minot State University, dropping the contest 68-61. 

Mattie Schimenz led Winona State with 13 points knocking down three, three-pointers on the day as three Warriors scored in double figures in the defeat.

How it Happened: 

Megan Schuman got the Warriors rolling with a three-point play to begin the game. Winona State and the Beavers would then trade baskets, including five straight three-pointers coming from both teams in the first quarter. At the end of one, Minot State saw themselves up 16-15. 

The second quarter began with MSU picking up where they left off knocking down three unanswered three-pointers to extend the lead to 30-17 early in the quarter. WSU eventually cut the lead on two Olivia Gamoke shots from beyond the arc, making it a five-point game before the end of the half. WSU down 34-39 at the half. 

At the start of the third quarter Minot State got on the board first with a layup from Sydney Gustavsson, followed by two Warriors jumpers from Mattie Schimenz and Hailey Markworth, cutting the lead to three points. Following those baskets WSU would earn a stop and tie the game up at 41-41 with a made three-pointer from Lindsey Hahn. Trading points to end the third quarter, MSU jumped out to a 50-46 lead once the buzzer sounded. 

A jumper made by Vivica Bretton and a Schimenz three-pointer saw the Warriors up one at 51-50 early in the fourth quarter. But Minot State would not back down, responding with a 10-2 run spanning most of the fourth quarter. In the final two minutes of the game, the Warriors saw themselves down seven points, but a jumper from Bretton as well as two threes from Lindsey Hahn and Olivia Gamoke narrowed the deficit to two. With WSU needing to foul, Minot State put the game away with free throws with the Warriors falling 68-61. 

Team Comparison: 

  • Minot State scored 16 points off turnovers compared to the Warriors three. 
  • WSU notched 13 bench points to the Beavers three. 
  • Winona State went to the charity stripe three times in the game, while MSU shot 13 in the game. 
  • The Warriors made 11 three-pointers in the contest while Minot State made 10. 

Statistical Leaders: 

  • Mattie Schimenz led the Warriors with 13 points and a team-high five assists. 
  • Olivia Gamoke collected 12 points on the evening. 
  • Megan Schuman paced WSU in rebounds with 11 while collecting eight points as well. 
  • Sydney Gustavsson had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the Beavers. 

Winona State is next in action on Saturday, January 4 at 3:30pm where they face off against the University of Mary Marauders in Bismarck, N.D.
