BISMARCK, N.D. – The Warriors were unable to catch up with UMary's hot shooting and fell 69-48 on the road.
The Marauders went 13-29 (.448) from three, including 9-13 in the first half, while Winona State shot just .267 (8-29) from deep. WSU was unable to overcome a 17-point deficit at halftime, eventually falling by 21.
How it Happened:
After
Hailey Markworth opened the scoring for the game, UMary went on a quick 11-0 run aided by three 3-pointers. The Warriors battled back to bring it within three towards the end of the first, but a layup and a three-pointer as the first quarter wound down gave the Marauders a 24-16 lead after one.
Winona State once again brought the margin to three points in the second quarter, but consecutive threes by UMary gave them a comfortable lead and the Marauders never looked back. WSU trailed 43-26 heading into the locker room at half.
The Warriors outscored the Marauders by four points in the third quarter and brought the scoring margin to within single digits, but it wasn't enough and UMary held on for the 69-48 victory.
Individual Leaders:
- Megan Schuman was the lone Warrior in double figures, scoring 12 points and also grabbing a team high seven rebounds.
- Vivica Bretton added eight points and six boards.
- Hailey Markworth dished out four assists to go with seven points.
- Bergen Kinnebrew led all scorers with 16 points for the Marauders.
Team Comparison:
- Winona State shot 32.8% from the field compared to UMary going 42.1% on shot attempts.
- The Marauders controlled the glass, grabbing 38 rebounds and scoring 11 second chance points as WSU collected 33 boards with no second chance points.
- WSU went 2-5 from the charity stripe and UMary went 8-9.
Winona State will now open a four-game homestand that begins on Friday, January 10 against Minnesota Crookston.
