ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Winona State University women's basketball team wrapped up its weekend road trip with a 62–47 setback against Maryville University on Saturday afternoon inside Moloney Arena.
Bria Stenstrom and Hailey Markworth each finished with nine points to lead the offense, while Breah Golden added 11 points and provided an offensive boost in several key stretches. Although the Warriors put together a strong 22-point fourth quarter, they ultimately could not overcome a slow second period that allowed Maryville to build a significant lead.
How It Happened:
Winona State matched Maryville early as the teams traded baskets throughout a competitive first quarter that ended in a 13–13 tie. The Warriors forced six turnovers in the opening frame and found early contributions from several players, including a pair of baskets from Hailey Markworth.
The second quarter shifted the momentum decisively in favor of the Saints. WSU managed just one made field goal in the period and was outscored 19–4, allowing Maryville to take a 32–17 advantage into halftime. Despite strong defensive rebounding, turnovers and cold shooting created a difficult offensive stretch for the Warriors.
Golden opened the second half with a three-pointer, giving the Warriors a spark, and WSU found more rhythm offensively as the third quarter continued. However, Maryville continued to maintain its lead and entered the final quarter ahead 45–25.
Winona State's best period came in the fourth, where the Warriors scored 22 points—matching nearly all of their production from the previous three quarters combined. Stenstrom's nine points and Markworth's aggressive drives helped cut the deficit, and WSU's full-court pressure created several scoring chances late. Even so, Maryville held steady and closed out the 62–47 final.
