WINONA, Minn.- Winona State women's basketball defeated Michigan Tech in a dominant 78-54 win.
The Warriors cruised to a 34-19 lead at halftime behind a strong defensive unit. Winona State kept their foot on the gas in the second half to a controlling 24-point victory. WSU never trailed in the non-conference victory.
How it Happened:
Winona State jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead behind a pair of free throws by
Megan Schuman followed by a
Breah Golden jumper at the 9:08 mark in the first quarter. Back-to-back threes by
Vivica Bretton and Golden extended the Warriors lead to 10-4.
Hailey Markworth added herself to the scoring column on a layup assisted by Bretton to make it 18-9 with 2:30 left in the first frame. Schuman connected on a jumper to make it 20-11 after one quarter.
Megan Johnson stalled a small Huskies run with a layup to make it 22-15 with 7:07 left in the first half. Golden drilled her third three-pointer of the half to give the Warriors a double-digit lead at 25-15. Alayna Supernand scored on a driving layup to increase the WSU lead to 30-19 with 3:56 left in the half. Bretton recorded a layup at 0:32 left to give the Warriors a 34-19 lead heading into the break.
Winona State ballooned their lead to 20 behind a Bretton layup, giving the squad a 43-23 lead with 6:45 left in the third quarter.
Sadie Jarmolowicz buried a three-ball to make it 49-29 with 2:23 remaining in the quarter. Michigan Tech cut the lead to 14 after a Soraya Timms floater making it 53-39 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Golden knocked home a three-pointer, adding to the Warriors lead at 56-39. Markworth scored on a step-back jumper with 6:10 left, putting WSU back up by 20 at 64-44.
Natalie Meaux chipped into the Warrior scorebook with a three-pointer at 4:01 making it 71-46. The Huskies scored on a layup by Kaitlyn Maxwell producing the game's final at 78-54.
