MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team defeated Minnesota State University Moorhead on the road 58-48.
Hailey Markworth led the Warriors in scoring with 23 points on 9-16 (56%) shooting from the field.
How it Happened:
MSUM's Terryn Johnson scored the first points of the contest with a layup assisted by Ashton Safranski. Markworth scored the first points for the Warriors with a jump shot. The first quarter was back and forth with the Dragons scoring the last points of the quarter with a layup from Safranski, bringing the score to WSU 17, MSUM 13.
MSU Moorhead started the second quarter off quickly, scoring four points within the first minute of the quarter. Trading baskets late in the second, a three-pointer from Markworth and a jump shot from Markworth before the buzzer closed out the scoring in the first half, bringing the score to WSU 34, MSUM 27.
The Dragons scored first to begin the second half with a pair of free throws from Abby Berge. The third quarter remained close, with each team trading baskets throughout the quarter. Markworth closed out the scoring in the third with a jump shot to bring the score to WSU 48, MSUM 38.
The Warriors started the fourth quarter, where they left off in the third with a layup from Markworth. Winona State made a late push toward the end of the fourth, increasing the lead with free throws from
Mattie Schimenz and
Sadie Jarmolowicz. WSU would go on to win the contest 58-48.
Individual Leaders:
- Markworth led the Warriors in scoring with 23 points and in rebounds with 11.
- Schimenz and Markworth led Winona State in assists with two each.
- Megan Schuman, Olivia Gamoke, and Markworth led WSU in steals with one each.
- Jarmolowicz led the Warriors in blocks with one.
- Berge led the Dragons in points with 15.

- WSU went 22-50 (44&) from the field, while MSUM went 20-57 (35.1%).
- The Dragons went 3-19 (15.8%) from beyond the arc, while the Warriors went 4-16 (25%).

Winona State will return to action on Saturday, February 22nd, to face off against St. Cloud State University on the road. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn.
