LIBERTY, Mo. – The Winona State University baseball team opened the 2025 season with a 11-5 win on the road against William Jewell College (Mo.).
Winona State started hot, recording the first three runs of the contest on hits from
Cole Fuecker,
Jess Ondell, and
Ben Hefel. The Warriors would continue to dominate throughout the remainder of the contest by scoring in six out of the nine innings played.
WSU cycled through three pitchers in today's matchup versus WJC.
Pierce Gritzmaker threw an effective first four innings for the Warriors, striking out four Cardinals. A brief relief stint by
Max Strecker was followed by a close from
George Henkel on the Warriors' mound.
Jack Funke led Winona State with a 2-4 outing at the plate, including one home run. Fuecker and
Mason Trocke each recorded one home run in the contest.
William Jewell College (Mo) was led by a 1-3 outing at the plate from Jordan Phillips. Jacob Sullivan received the start for the Cardinals on the mound and to close out the contest was Jack Wells.
Winona State (1-0, 0-0 NSIC) is next in action on Wednesday, February 26th, when they head to Topeka, Kan., to face off against Washburn University. First pitch is set for 2:00pm at Falley Field.
