TOPEKA, Kan. – The Winona State baseball team closed out their two-game road trip with a 21-10 loss against Washburn.
Winona State started the contest off hot, recording the first three runs of the contest on home runs from
Jack Funke and
Alex Berreth. The Warriors scored again in the third inning on a groundout RBI from
Ryland Wall, late in the inning, Washburn tied it at four with a home run to right center from Easton Bruce.
The Ichabods scored 11 runs in the fourth inning, starting with an RBI single to right field from Connor Scott. They also added four runs to the score in the following inning with an RBI single to right field from Easton Bruce and a home run to right center from Darian Duhon.
WSU rallied in the sixth inning to cut into the scoring differential by bringing six runs by
Payton Kohnle getting walked with the bases loaded,
Cole Fuecker being hit by a pitch, and
Klayton Hawkins hitting a grand slam. Washburn would put on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and run rule Winona State in the seventh.
Logan LeTourneau got the start for the Warriors on the mound, pitching 2.2 innings, recording three strikeouts, and allowing four runs on five hits.
Peyton Lee would come into relief and pitch 1.0 inning, allowing seven runs on six hits and receiving the loss. WSU was led by a 2-2 outing at the plate from
Payton Beyer.
The Ichabods were led by a 4-5 outing at the plate from Cash Jay. Chase Torkelson received the start for Washburn on the mound and to relieve in was Cal Leonard who received the win.
Winona State (1-1) is next in action on Friday, May 7th, when they head to Tucson, Ariz., to face off against Dickinson State University in WSU's first game of the Tucson Invitational. First pitch is set for 5:00pm on field five at the Kino Sports Complex.
