WINONA STATE ATHLETICS SPRING BREAK: MONDAY, MARCH 10

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State Athletics spring break: Monday, March 10.
 
BASEBALL
WSU (14) – NSU (12):
In the series finale, Winona State earned a 14-12 win over Northern State to open NSIC play with a 4-0 record. The Warriors jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first, highlighted by a Ben Hefel three-run home run. The Wolves answered right back with four runs in the bottom half of the first. The Warriors added three more in the second, but NSU scored five runs to tie it up at nine apiece after two innings.
 
WSU scored two more in the third, and NSU added three of their own. Jess Ondell hit one over the left field fence to tie the game up at 12-12 in the top of the fourth. Both pitching staffs settled into the game and held each other scoreless in the fifth and sixth. WSU rallied two runs in the seventh inning to take a 14-12 lead, and they were able to hang on from there.
 
Winona State collected 15 hits from seven different players. Cole Fuecker went 4-6 with a team-high four RBIs. Jack Funke, Payton Beyer, and Alex Berreth each added multi-hit games.
 
The Warriors used three pitchers for the first three innings, but Cole Stanchina settled in on the mound for WSU, going 5.1 innings and allowing just one run while striking out 10 batters to earn the win. Boyd Skelley picked up the save as he retired the final two batters.
 
TENNIS

After a long day of weather delays and lenghty matches, Winona State fell to West Chester 5-1. The Warriors picked up the doubles points after Skylar Gary and Alexandra Madjun won 7-6 at No. 2 doubles and Ally Burger and Clara Thoemke swept their opponents 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. WSU was unable to pull out any singles matches. Thoemke battled to a third set at No. 2 singles but lost the supertiebreaker 10-7. Gary also went to a super tiebreaker at No. 3 singles but fell short, 11-9.
