Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. – The Winona State University baseball team defeated Augsburg University (MN) 9-5.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Warriors took the lead, adding four runs. Outstanding defense from Winona State held Augsburg University (MN) scoreless in their final two at-bats of the contest granting WSU the victory.
The Auggies recorded the first runs of the contest in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout from Andruw Vela and a single from Tyson LaPoint. They added two more runs in their next at-bats on an error from third base allowing Keegan O'Connor to score and a single from Davis Wick.
Winona State chipped away at the lead in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs on a triple from
Alex Berreth and a single from
Josh Gullickson. The Warriors' defense, led by
Peyton Lee on the mound, held the Auggies scoreless in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, keeping the score close going into the top of the fifth. In their next at-bat, Winona State tied it up on a single from Garrett Hieptas.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Augsburg University (MN) took the lead back with a double from Wick. Answering back in the top of the eighth inning, the Warriors' bats came alive, recording five runs on a sacrifice fly from
Cole Fuecker, a ground-out RBI from Gullickson, a single from Hieptas, and a double from
Klayton Hawkins. The Auggies were unable to answer back in their final at-bats of the contest giving Winona State a 9-5 victory.
Peyton Lee got the start for the Warriors on the mound, pitching 6.0 innings, recording five strikeouts, and allowing five runs on eight hits.
Sawyer Hoffman received the win for Winona State after relieving Lee, pitching 2.0 innings, recording one strikeout, and allowing no runs on one hit. Recording one strikeout and allowing no runs on one hit in his closing performance was
Cole Stanchina. Hieptas lead the team with a 5-3 outing at the plate.
Jake Pittelkow got the start for the Auggies on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings, recording four strikeouts, and allowing four runs on 10 hits. Caleb Tays received the loss for Augsburg University (MN) after relieving Pittelkow, pitching 3.0 innings, and allowing four runs on four hits. Coming into close was Sean Littmann, pitching 1.1 innings, recording one strikeout, and allowing one run on three hits. Wick ;ead the team with a 5-3 outing at the plate.
Winona State is next in action on Friday, March 21st, when they kick off a four-game weekend series with a doubleheader against their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opponent, the University of Mary. The first contest is set for 1:30pm and the second contest is set for 4:30pm on Friday at Loughrey Field in Winona, Minn.
